BIM/CIM solutions help areas affected by the earthquake
FARO® joins the Mexican government in the 3D scanning of affected structures after the earthquake that occurred on September 19, 2017.
The catastrophic consequences left by the earthquake, which had an impact of 8.2 degrees on the Ritcher scale, are still incalculable. For this reason FARO joins the work of engineers, architects and local surveyors to determine fault zones and try to prevent future natural events from turning into such disastrous results.
The municipality of Tlahuac, in Mexico City, was the scene where the FARO FocusS 350 Laser Scanner was the protagonist of the interior and exterior records of the affected structures. The FARO FocusS 350 Laser Scanner is characterized by the capture of real-world information and the transfer to the digital world to provide useful information for analysis, collaboration and decision making. In this study, the decision making corresponds to the Mexican authorities, since through the obtained records they can decide if the reconstruction of these structures is feasible.
The FARO FocusS 350 Laser Scanner and FARO SCENE Software performed on-site registration of complex environments to transmit, process, align and record 3D scan data wirelessly, in real time. Through the SCENE Software and the third party RITHIM plug-in it was possible to evaluate the deviation analysis of the wall and the floor.
Data recollection only took 2 days, involving a total of 8 hours of manual labor FARO’s technology provided an advantageous solution for Mexican government authorities compared to traditional measuring instruments, since the same process would have taken 30 days or 240 hours of manual work.
With the BIM/CIM solutions offered by FARO and RITHIM, the architects, surveyors, and construction workers were able to determine which affected areas could still be repaired and which areas were a total loss and needed to be rebuilt from scratch in just 2 days.
