CAD files imported as assemblies (CATIA V5 Assembly, Pro/E Assembly, STEP, etc.) are organized in the Object Manager’s design folder in the same tree structure as they were in their native CAD software.
Proper group management and filtering are quick and easy ways to work more efficiently. Here are a few tricks that will help you manage groups within BuildIT to speed up your workflow.
This makes it easy to display only the pertinent part of the CAD you are working with while hiding the rest, making your 3D view less cluttered and more responsive when the file is large enough that the display is slowed down.
When changing a group’s visibility to “hidden”, all of its sub-groups will be hidden as well.
- To hide a group, you don’t have to hide the surfaces themselves; simply select the group/folder and uncheck Put in Show.
- The flip side of this is that if you want to bring a surface back in Show, not only must it have “Put in Show” checked, but so do all of the groups it belongs to.
On a side note, since we’re on the topic of hiding surfaces, I’d like to remind you of a few very useful visibility tools that are often forgotten:
- Put In No Show: Take advantage of this command’s filter. If you want to hide all curves in your model, you can simply select that filter, click ALL and then click Apply.
- Put In No Show by Colour: Some models will colour-code their surfaces. You can hide all surfaces of a certain colour with this command.
- Put In No Show by Size: For large models that include many fillets and chamfers or multiple tiny complex items you will not be inspecting (such as nuts and bolts), you can hide these surfaces from your view with this command.
Organising folders when opening old models
In older BuildIT versions, groups would be found in the Groups folder:
When we introduced the ability to create Nested Groups, we allowed them anywhere in the object manager, and so we’ve removed the Groups folder. If you open an old BuildIT file in version 2015, the groups will be displayed in their respective design/constructed/measurements folder.
For old BuildIT files that had imported a large assembly file, the groups weren’t nested. If you open them in a recent BuildIT release you’ll find that the design folder is very bloated. Due to the fact that folders are placed at the top of the list, you’ll have to scroll all the way down past the groups to get to the geometries which aren’t grouped, like the World Axes, or geometries you created yourself.
If you want to remove this inconvenience, it’s very simple: Select all of the top-level groups from your imported CAD and group them together. You’ll be left with a single group/folder, and your geometries right after it — Nice and compact.
Keeping things old-fashioned
If having geometries in the same group hierarchy as the native CAD file’s doesn’t serve your workflow at all and you want to ungroup everything, the easiest way to do this is to use the Edit: Ungroup command where you can select ALL.
