How to create custom deviation labels in BuildIT

Why would you create custom deviation labels?

Custom deviation labels can help facilitate the comprehension of screenshots and reports by using meaningful reference names.This can be useful when making alignment adjustments in relation to large objects, or when presenting an inspection to a client who is unfamiliar with the type of work or report.


To access this functionality, you only need to head to the Settings. Under Display, in the Deviations section, you will see the following parameters. You can select which deviations you want to customize, and enter the label you want to replace the standard dX, dY, or dZ labels. You can also input different values for the positive and negative labels. If you do, you might want to deactivate the “Show Sign” option as your labels will already provide you with that information.

In the example above, we are measuring the deviations of rolls in a mill.  We’ve decided to use our custom deviation labels to indicate positive deviations along the Y-axis as deviations to the East, and negative ones as deviations to the West.  Notice we’ve also chosen not to show the positive/negative signs on the Y-axis deviations to avoid any confusion.  For the Z-axis, we’ve labelled it as the Slope and kept the positive/negative signs to show whether it is sloping up or down.

These custom deviation labels will be applied in all of the annotations, in the measure control window and in the reports.

As you can see, these custom deviation labels can provide meaningful information from which a technician or client can create a real-world plan of action.
