Hi Randy,
Yes, you are correct, flatness should properly be checked against itself. For example, in fig 3, the flatness is controlled by another surface, which is incorrect. However, in fig 2, the adjustable columns are what let you check flatness to itself, as it lets you tilt the surface freely.
