Review: Technology & Latest Innovation for the AEC Industry from Autodesk University 2017

Autodesk University last month was an incredible week – featuring industry insights, technology and new product announcements – and FARO® was there showcasing its latest ground-breaking technology!

The latest generation of the FARO Focus Laser Scanner coupled with FARO SCENE software was on display, showing how AEC professionals can obtain real-time, on-site registration at project sites. Software demos – including PointSense for Revit® and AutoCAD®, SCENE registration, Freestyle3D X Processing & 3D Virtual Reality – were also on display and bustling with visitors.

However, the greatest highlight from the show was the new Virtual Reality (VR) features in SCENE.

SCENE now features built-in 3D VR functionality, creating a unique way of exploring scan data by enabling virtual walkthroughs of projects so users can:

  • Extract measurements
  • Make annotations
  • Capture screenshots
  • Create CAD visualizations

This immersive VR experience integrates detailed photographic textures – such as surface details of an object – and renders 3D scan data so quickly it appears to generate in real time!

Reducing Project Cycle Time & Enhancing Productivity:

By enabling users to view an entire project through this full 3D VR from a user’s office or workstation, they can now:

  • Quickly simulate and compare reality elements
  • Take/Capture screenshots
  • Tag comments or notes specific to images
  • Navigate the system overview map in real-time

These features allow architecture, engineering and construction professionals to significantly cut down project time and streamline project evaluations for greater productivity.

Designed for Any Device:

While SCENE is optimized for the FARO laser scanning portfolio, it is also device agnostic, allowing seamless acceptance and management of 3D scan data from other, non-FARO products.
